Dr Lister studied at the University of Edinburgh. He was intimate with Mr Cline and Dr Baillie. His literary talents were noted in the obituaries he wrote for Baillie and Dr Wells in the Gentleman's Magazine for November 1817 and October 1823. In 1802 Lister was called to give evidence to a parliamentary committee convened to examine Jenner's discovery of vaccine inoculation in March 1802. He died of self-diagnosed heart disease and was survived by his son, Nathaniel, who was also a doctor and who succeeded his father as physician to the Orphan Working School.
Lister appears with various radicals (including Hollis and Tooke) throughout the diary. However, these types of entries are interspersed with others that clearly deal with Godwin's health so seems likely that Lister was a reformer as well as Godwin’s long-time physician.
Godwin records his death (3.2.1830, 'Dr Lister dies'). 'S Lister' (1798-1801) and Dan Lister may be related.
