William Godwin's Diary

Lewis,

  • Name: Lewis,
  • Gender: Male

There are a number of possibilities for Lewis in the diary. The entries are grouped around 1789/90; a larger group in the mid 1790s; a similar group from 1799-1803; and a group 1809-1813. These may all be to the same Lewis, or may indicate different Lewises.

Sir Watkyn Lewes (1740?-1821) was an MP for the City of London and had served as Lord Mayor of the city. Goodwin, Friends of Liberty notes his presence at the London Revolution Society meeting in November 1788. While Godwin does not mention meeting him there, this is not suprising as there were 300 attendees. Instances of Lewis between 1788-1791 have a high probablility of being Sir Watkyn given the association with dissenting figures such as Helen Maria Williams, the Hollises, and Andrew Kippis. An entry on the 14 May 1791 is also suggestive. After dinner at B. Hollis's, Godwin records 'suspended for want of money. (Lewis.) Watkin Lewes was later imprisoned for debt so this may refer to a suspension from the House of Commons for insolvency.

However, David Lewis, son of the dissenting minister Israel Lewis, may also be noted in the 1788-1791 period. There is little known about David Lewis, but he appears in the diary of Margaret Hazlitt. When the Hazlitts returned from America in 1787, they all stayed with the family of David Lewis in London for a few weeks. Lewis had been a close family friend from the Hazlitts' time in Maidstone in the 1770s (Hazlitt Sr succeeded Israel Lewis at the Presbyterian congregation there). When the Hazlitts moved up to Wem in Shropshire in November 1787, John Hazlitt the painter remained in London and appears to have lived in David Lewis's house while he pursued his early career: Margaret Hazlitt writes that 'John was left in London, under the eye of David Lewis, to begin his career as a miniature painter.' (Moyne, 102) According to Margaret Hazlitt, Lewis was close friends with David Williams (1738-1816) and the two men were very active in trying to get Hazlitt Sr. settled in a good congregation after his return from America. John Hazlitt and David Williams were part of Godwin's circle - the DNB notes that David Williams met Godwin in 1792. David Lewis, as a close friend of John Hazlitt and David Williams, may have been acquainted with Godwin also.

William Thomas Lewis, (1746-1812), actor and theatre manager, also appears in the diary. Godwin meets him in January 1796 (Meet Lewis c.g.) when he probably told Godwin that Covent Garden would not stage St Dunstan. He may appear at later stages associated with Frederick Reynolds in 1800 and there are further meetings in that year which may be related to the upcoming performance of Antonio (although this would be staged in Drury Lane).

A difficulty with the case of 'Lewis' in the diary is that Godwin notes meeting a new Lewis in 1795 in his 1796 list of acquaintances. This suggests that there are two 'main' Lewises. However, instances of Lewis both before and after this date mix in similar circles so it is difficult to distinguish them on the basis of the date alone after 1795. It does suggest, however, that the Lewises of 1788-1791 all relate to the same person - but it is unclear whether this is Watkyn, David, or indeed someone else entirely.

There are other instances of Lewis in the diary which have been left uncoded as we have a high degree of confidence that they are not any of the three Lewises noted above. These are: 'lewis, distiller' (21 August 1800); 'lewis cs' (31 January 1802); '(lewis) elephanta' (29 August 1811); 'al. lewis' (12 September 1812); and, 'Lewis' (10 October 1833).
