See DNB.

Godwin records 'Kemble' under 1796 in the 1796 lists. We have two Kemble entries prior to 1796:
22 June 1792: 'Dine at Holcroft's, with Mr and Mrs Kemble:' - coded as John Philip Kemble
7 June 1795: 'see C Kemble' - coded as Charles ('see' might denote less than a 'full' meeting)
It seems most likely that the Kemble who appears in the 1796 list is the most publicly prominent Kemble: John Philip. Therefore, unless Godwin is overlooking the 1792 meeting, the 'Mr and Mrs Kemble' recorded on 22 June 1792 must refer to two other members of the family - although it is not clear who. We have followed this logic and assumed that Kemble without an initial refs to John Philip Kemble - the most prominent of the family - and that his slightly less well-known brother Charles is always denoted by G as 'C Kemble'.

There are also two entries for 'Mrs C Kemble' - also an actress and the mother of Fanny Kemble. We have also coded Stephen Kemble (1758-1822), actor and theatre manager, who features twice (10.11.1818 and 15.4.1820)
