Apparently Major Jardine married a Spanish woman with whom he had at least five children, three of whom died in quick succession in 1792. Jardine was appointed consul to Galicia in 1791, leaving for the post in 1793; Southey met them in 1795 when visiting the Iberian peninsular and refers to them both in his correspondence from this period and in his Letters Written During a Short Residence in Spain and Portugal (1797). Jose Berenguel has suggested to us that: 'Alexander's wife was called Juana and he met her during his service as an officer in Gibraltar. She was possibly of Spanish origin because of her name but was, the same as Jardine, very fluent in both languages, English and Spanish, something really not very common at the time. At one point of Alexander's life, when he was seriously ill and soon to be forced to leave the country after the outburst of another war between Britain and Spain (1796), he asked the Spanish Prime Minister for a permit to stay and be cared for by a doctor in a spa near his residence and he alleged his contribution to the peace between the two nations, his acquaintance with Jovellanos (a leading political figure of the Spanish enlightenment, a kind of local Dr. Johnson) and, last but not least, the Spanish origin of his wife.
