  • Name: Hill, Matthew Davenport
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 6  August  1792
  • Death Date: 7  June  1872
  • Occupation: penal reformer

Godwin initially refers to him as M. Hill and Mat. Hill. He sees him in company with Bowring, J. Hume and Gent, and he calls on him on three occasions in 1833 without success, before writing to him, at the same time he writes to henry Borougham. . Identification is confirmed by his association with Henry Brougham in the diary. Hill represented those accused in Nottingham of rioting in the run up to the 1832 Reform act. He was elected to Parliament in December and it may be that Godwin was seeking to use him to influence the Whigs in the matter of his sinecure. Two of the calls in 1833 seem to be to Westminster Hall.
