This identification is tentative. William Hilton's friends included J Taylor, Keats and Lamb, but there is little in Godwin's contacts with Hilton to suggest these connections - or indeed any clues. One possibility is that Godwin sought out young artists with a view to securing their services for the publishing house. Equally, Godwin has many links with the art world and he may have sought Hilton's company because he recognised a young talent. Both suggestions are speculative and further evidence is required to confirm the identification.
