William Godwin's Diary

Hazlitt, Sarah (née Stoddart)

  • Name: Hazlitt, Sarah (née Stoddart)
  • Gender: Female
  • Birth Date: 1774
  • Death Date: 1840

Sarah Hazlitt first appears as 'Miss Stodart' in 1806. She married William Hazlitt on 1 May 1808 and is then described as 'Mrs Hazlit' or 'S Hazlit' and included in 'Hazlits' or meals at 'Hazlit's'. They were divorced in 1822 and Hazlitt remarried in April 1824. This makes the identification of 'Mrs W Hazlitt'', who calls on Godwin on 1 June 1824 suspect. The Hazlitt's do not set out on the European tour until the Autumn of 1824. Also, Godwin has fallen into a pattern of referring to Hazlitt's first wife as S Hazlit - which suggests that this may be a call from Mrs Isabella Hazlitt. If so, it is likely the only one: the Hazlitt's separated in Paris the following year.
