'Tho Harvey' is listed under 1796 in the 1796 lists and appears
in that year on 10 July:
'July 10. Su. Beddoes, p. 164, fin. Dine at Tho Harvey’s, w. Pocklington & Alderson:
tea W Taylor’s, w. A: sup at miss Plumptree’s, w. Thelwals & A: meet
Dalrymple: propose to Alderson.'
This is while Godwin is on a trip to Norfolk, allowing for the identification as Thomas Harvey, a
master weaver and amateur painter, as well as an art collector, connoisseur and patron, who
lived at Catton outside Norwich. He married Lydia Twiss and so Richard and Francis Twiss,
both in the diary, were his brothers-in-law. He is listed as one of the subscribers to John Opie's
RA lectures, owned Gainsborough's 'Cottage Door' and Thomas Crome was among the 'Norwich
School' artists he encouraged - in part by allowing him to copy the paintings in his collection and
by introducing him to Opie.
The 1796 appearance has been coded, along with:
1 -- 3 harveys: 1800-05-18
2 -- harvey (other refences to this name by itself are some years (1824-27) after the last contact with Thomas Harvey (1807),
and are after his death)
1801-04-19 1807-08-21
2 -- harveys
1795-09-29 1797-05-19
These identifications are made with some confidence, although the one before 1796 is more tentative:
29 September 1795: 'dine at Foulkes's , w. Harveys, Barnard & miss Virgil, Hutchinson' - Barnard
is Norwich connection and Godwin does sometimes makes mistakes in dating first meetings.
Later identifications are made with more confidence: 19 May 1797: 'tea A A's , Harveys, Opie, Woodhouse, Suet, Fuseli, Edwards, Wt & B Plumptree' - this is convincing because it with Alderson and Opie, who knew Thomas Harvey. 18 May 1800: 'Dine at H Tooke's , w. 3 Oxfords, 5 Scotts, 2 Burdets, 3 Harveys, Bosville, Tooke, Dyer, Wardle, Perry & miss Sloper:' - this is convincing because 26 July 1795 shows the relationship between Tooke and Mrs Harvey, and 2 May 1795 shows that this is the right Mrs Harvey - since she appears in conjunction with Mrs Twiss. 19 April 1801: 'Dine at H Tooke's , w. Harvey:' - see above for Tooke connection. 21 August 1807: 'Harvey, &c, call n:'
