Hamilton became the publisher of the Critical Review in 1758 and took over the journal's editorship from Tobias Smollett in 1763. He was friendly with David Garrick, Samuel Johnson, and Oliver Goldsmith.
Although there are three Archibald Hamiltons, all of whom were printers, grandfather (d. 9 March 1793), father (who predeceases him, 6 October 1792) and two son (dates unknown: Archibald and Samuel), the identification can be ascertained by the entry of 28 Aug 1791 when Godwin notes his age being 71 - corresponding with the DNB.
Hamilton appears with Robinson, Holcroft and Nicholson but as the diary goes on the meetings seem to become less intimate and more related to business (letters and calls instead of dinners). For entries after Archibald Hamilton's death see Samuel Hamilton.
