Charles Grey was a member of the Whigs who eventually became prime minister. He was closely involved with many political issues of the period from the trial of Warren Hastings to Catholic Emancipation.
Attributions are clear up to 1833 when Godwin also writes to and hears from a 'C Grey' (see correspondence dated 16 April 1833 and 25 July 1834 - these show that Charles Grey (possibly Earl Grey's son) is an assistant to Earl Grey and that Godwin was writing to him with respect to the exchequer vacancy that Earl Grey had promised him. There is subsequently a series of letters to Grey that are not specific between the Earl and Charles - but these have been coded as Earl. Grey because even if directed to Charles they are likely to be intended for Earl Grey. Earl Grey resumes his appearances the following year.
Godwin's 1796 Diary list suggests he met Grey first in 1787. It is noteworthy that this is in the same year that he meets Gray (currently unidentified) - which suggests that Godwin is careful to distinguish between them from the beginning.
