  • Name: Goring, Charles
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date:
  • Death Date:

Goring appears only once, on 19 May 1793, 'Dine at H Tooke’s, with Gonzaga, Tooke, Harwood, Seward, Knight, Goring, Wathen, Sharpe, Joice, Symonds and Dyson.' However, he features in the 1796 list - under 1793. Because of the context - dinner at Tooke's - we can identify him as Charles Goring, member of the Society for Constitutional Information. In Thomas Hardy's trial, printed in A Complete Collection of State Trials and Proceedings for High Treason and other Crimes and Misdemeanors, there is a reference to Charles Goring as one of the stewards of an SCI meeting on 2 May 1794. Several of the other stewards were also at the Tooke dinner - Knight, Joyce, Sharp - or have known Tooke/SCI links, so I think we can be confident that this Charles Goring is the same Goring that Godwin meets in 1793.
