Ann Godwin was William's mother. Although it is odd that Godwin refers to his mother as AG, it can be established that he is referring to his mother. Godwin does not elsewhere refer to the death of his mother, an event he would surely have noted. The date of death also fits and the confirming evidence is that he refers to his mother's funeral with some detail in 1809 in a letter. A letter from Godwin to John Rickman, June 1808, notes that his mother is 86, confirming her birth and death dates.
Therefore, all references to mere, Ann Godwin and A G have been coded as GOD08.
Godwin notes her death.
