Harriet is Godwin's niece, the daughter of Joseph Godwin. St Clair suggests that she is married to Godwin's brother, Joseph (see St Clair , p. 247 - in contrast to P. Marshall's claim that Joseph was married to Mary (p. 13)). The evidence suggests that Joseph is married to Mary Jex.
There is an intense period of anxiety with respect to Harriet in 1804, for which there is evidence in the National Archive. Godwin helps his brother Joseph between 23 February and 27 February 1804 when Harriet runs off with Thomas West. Thomas West had earlier expressed interest in marrying Harriet, but in June 1803 he had married Ms Lucy Dallas, the sister of Sir George Dallas. On 17 January 1804 Harriet ran off with West to Lewes, where West held a post in the army. Godwin and Joseph (Harriet's father) went to Lewes but did not see West until they arranged for Lord Craven, the colonel of West's regiment, to summon him. They were still denied access to Harriet. The affadavit to Judge Grose was to bring Harriet before him. Harriet, however, remained with West. On 13 April Godwin and Mary Jane visited Mrs West and Lady Dallas. West on behalf of Jo Godwin. He does so very shortly before a trip to the south coast, where he then calls on West in or near Lewes, and then exchanges letters and calls over the next few days. The later reference to Ht West at Jo Godwin's is in fact references to Harriet Godwin and has been coded as such. Mrs West in 1804 is West's wife and has been coded separately.
It has been assumed that Godwin is consistent in the notation of family names. Therefore, all H Godwin's have been assumed to be Hannah while Ht Godwin has assumed to be Harriet in all cases.
