The appearances of Gillies (and Gillies’s) offer no real clue to the identity of this person – however, there’s a John Gillies in the DNB with appropriate dates (1747–1836). Gillies’s principal work was a history of Greece, but he also translated two of Aristotle's works, Nicomachean Ethics and Politics. According to the DNB, the ‘second edition of 1804 added a reply to criticism by the Platonist Thomas Taylor’. Gillies’s earlier appearances tend to be at Paradise’s, and include this beguiling entry: Apr. 18. Su. Dine at Holcroft's : tea Paradise's, with sir R. A's Truchement , B. Hollis, Rutledge, Planta, Nollekens, Hawkins, Gillies, Russian chaplain, Cyclops. '

The dates and the circles (Kippis, Planta, Hollis) do seem to match up - so that this identification can be considered probable. 1788 - Dinner at Cadel's with Sheffield, Kippis, Fullaston, Reynolds.
1790 - tea Paradise's, with sir R. A's Truchement , B. Hollis, Rutledge, Planta, Nollekens, Hawkins, Gillies, Russian chaplain, Cyclops.
