  • Name: Gerrald, Joseph

  • Death Date: 16  March  1796
  • Occupation: political reformer

Joseph Gerrald was a prominent member of the London Corresponding Society and was tried for sedition in 1794. He appears in Godwin’s diary from 1793 until his transportation in May 1795. Gerrald spoke at one of the meetings of the Philomaths in January 1794 which prompted Godwin to write to him urging him to defend himself with vigour at his trial. Many of the contacts are while Gerrald is in prison. There is a suggestion that Godwin is part of a committee that looks after the affairs of Gerrald and tries to support him in prison.

As was his custom, Godwin changed the spelling of ‘Gerrald’, removing one of the r’s.

Godwin records his death.
