John Fell worked as a minister to Independent congregations in Suffolk and Eccles. He published works such as Essay on the Love of One's Country (1772) and Genuine Protestantism, or, The Unalienable Rights of Conscience Defended (1773) which established his literary reputation. Fell was associated with the movement to repeal the Test and Corporation Acts, which is how Godwin met him in 1790. He became tutor of Classics at Homerton Academy in 1787 but his temper and republican sympathies meant that he had an unsuccessful tenure and he resigned in January 1797 shortly before his death.
Fell should not be confused with Ralph Fell who appears more frequently in the diary.
