Godwin first met The Rev. Charles Este at William Bosville's. The DNB entry for the radical host Bosville lists the Revd Charles Este as one of his regular guests, and the Life of Holcroft refers to Parson Este as a frequenter of John Debrett's and speaks of him as a 'fast but fanciful traveller.'' In Jackson's Oxford Journal for 13 December 1828, the obituary column refers to Rev Charles Este, who with Major Edward Topham and Mr John Bell originally founded the World newspaper. See also John Taylor, Records of My Life for an extended entry on Este which refers especially to his love of the theatre.

According to John Taylor, Este was friends with John Kemble and had himself attempted a career on the stage. He published An Account of his Journey in the year 1793, through Flanders, Brabant, Germany, and Switzerland (J. Debrett, 1795) and twice travelled to the West Indies. Bosville bequeathed £2000 to Este.

The Morning Chronicle advertised auctions of his paintings and books in November - December 1828 and lists his late residence as St George's Terrace, Hyde Park.
