Dermody appears in the 1796 lists, under 1796, and the only reference to him is in that year: 'Dine at Ht’s, w. Merry & Dermody'. He has a DNB entry and the identification is confirmed by a letter from him to Holcroft, seeking his acquaintance, reproduced in the life of Holcroft. The letter is dated 15 June 1796. and the dinner recorded by Godwin took place eleven days earlier, suggesting that Holcroft responded to Dermondy's praise and request that he 'direct a wandering muse' belonging to one 'little used to authorship as a trade, inexperienced in the polity of book- sellers, and even unacquainted with the city itself'. Dermody also relates that he had recently held a commission in the army and was currently under noble patronage. The DNB adds that having served with distinction in France he was living on half pay in London and drinking heavily and that he would die in poverty only six years later.
