  • Name: Dealtry, Peregrine (Perry)
  • Gender: Male
  • Death Date: 15  September  1814

Peregrine Perry Dealtry was the son of John Dealtry, MD, of York. He was a pupil and subsequently a close friend of Samuel Parr. During the early 1790s, he was a member of the Society of the Friends of the People, and was among the signatories of a 'Declaration agreed to by the society entitled the Friends of the People' (11 April 1792), reproduced in various accounts of Thomas Hardy's trial, and of a 'Declaration of the Friends to the Liberty of the Press' (given in 1793 publication of proceedings from 22 Dec 1792 and 19 Jan 1793).

On Dealtry and Parr see also Godwin's letter complaining to Luisa Holcroft about the publication of Thomas Holcroft's journals by William Hazlitt, in which he cites Holcroft as introducing Dealltry as saying that Parr could not spell. Dealtry does not appear in the published edition of the diary.

Dealtry died aged 52 while on a visit to Ryde in the Isle of Wight, on 15 September 1814. In his obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine, he is described as 'a steady friend to civil and religious liberty' who 'in earlier life had mingled a good deal with men whose politicks were of a less sober temperament than his own.'

Two of the entries that have been coded for Dealtry (23 April 1798 and 9 October 1798) are in fact entries to Dealtry j, or Dealtry jr. There is no evidence to suggest that Dealtry married (and he would have had to have married early to have a son attending dinners with Godwin), or that he had borthers. However, his obituary refers to hom as 'a gentle master, a warm friend, a kind neighbour and a tender relative' suggesting that there may have been a younger member of the family linked to him. Curiosly, the The Gentleman and citizen's almanack ... for the year of our Lord, 1815 notes Pereg. Dealtry as a clerk to the court and clerk to the rules, in the Court of the King's Bench, alongside a Henry Dealtry. These two instances have been coded as Peregrine Dealtry, although users should be aware that they may cast doubt on the attribution of both these and other entries for Dealtry.
