8 May 1788 (V)
Cadell was an eminent London publisher whose son took over his business in 1793. Godwin notes that there is a dinner to celebrate Gibbon's birthday and day of publication on 8 May 1788 held at Caddel's, although it is not entirely clear whether Godwin is reporting it, or whether he attended it. Notable publications included Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-88), Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling (1771), and the poetry of Robert Burns.
