Busby began his career as a musician and then proceeded to journalism. He was a parliamentary reporter for the London Courant and asssisted in editing the Mornign Post for a time. He was a member of the Wittinagemot Club, a society dedicated to the discussion of the commercial success of recently published literature, where he met Richard Phillips, Godwin's publisher. He received a doctorate in music from Cambridge in 1801 continued to write music and on music for many years.
