Brown was the son of John Brown (1735-1788; DNB) who edited and published some of his father's works, but who seems to have been based in London for a period. A letter from him to Godwin shows Brown waiting to take the examination in surgery and mentions the possibility of a placement in the Navy.
Brown's brothers include Ford Brown, who also appears in the diary (25 June 1812), and who was father of the painter Ford Maddox Brown.
