  • Name: Bloomfield, Robert
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 3  December  1766
  • Death Date: 19  August  1823

Born into a farming family, Bloomfield was too diminutive to make a success of this life. He moved to London in 1781 where he educated himself while learning his trade as a cobbler. He also attended the lecture of Joseph Fawcett (one of Godwin's principal 'oral instructors') in the Old Jewry. In 1798 Capel Lofft engineeered the publication of 'The Farmer's Boy' the poem which made Bloomfield's name. He later published Rural Tales (1801), Wild Flowers, or, Pastoral and Local Poetry (1806), and The Banks of the Wye: a Poem (1811).

The attribution is by no means certain but Godwin read 'Bloomfield' in 1812 which indicates that he was certianly a literary character.
