William Godwin's Diary

Barbauld, Rochemont

  • Name: Barbauld, Rochemont
  • Gender: Male
  • Birth Date: 1749
  • Death Date: 1808
  • Occupation: dissenter

Rochemont Barbauld was a dissenter with ties to Warrington Academy, best remembered today as the husband of poet Anna Barbauld.

There is no reason to believe that Godwin's primary relationship was with Mrs Barbauld. Indeed, given his dissenting background and his connections with the Warrington Academy contact with Rochemont Barbauld is more likely. On this basis the entries have been coded as Rochemont when they lack a plural or an apostrophe, or when not preceded by Mrs or A, and Mrs Barbauld has been included in all that have an apostrophe or a plural. This means that the majority of references do include Mrs Barbauld, and it suggests that the links between them do increasingly centre around mrs Barbauld - although Rochemont does continue to appear although usually as a 'meet' 'and only on two occasions clearly in company. However, one entry at Joseph Johnson's may in fact be Mrs Barbauld (11 January 1804) as we are not aware of Rochemont Barbauld having published work, while Anna Barbauld did publish with Johnson.
