The eminent mathematician Babbage appears in the diary between 1834-5 in what seem to be fashionable soirees, hosted by Leicester Stanhope, Lady Mary Shepherd and Lady Stepney, and there is an 'adv' meeting at the Royal Institution as well as a couple of meetings at Babbage's. The identification is confirmed by Hyman's Charles Babbage: Pioneer of the Computer' where there are matches for two of the hostesses mentioned above in the fashionable circles in which Babbage moved.
