Atherstone was a music teacher in Taunton and later wrote poetry and a novel about King Alfred. He was a close friend of John Martin's, at whose home many of his contacts with Godwin take place. Godwin usually misses off the end 'e', but the pattern of use strongly supports the view that Atherston and Atherstone are the same person.
