Charles Aldis studied in London in the 1790s, moved to Huntingdonshire in 1798 and eventually set up a practice in 1802. He seems to have met Godwin shortly after Mary Wollstonecraft's death; but there is then a break of twelve years in their contact. He was the author of A defence of the character and conduct of the late Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin : founded on principles of nature and reason, as applied to the peculiar circumstances of her case; in a series of letters to a lady (London, 1803) which must have endeared him to Godwin, although their friendship did not begin until 1810. A biographical memoir of Charles Aldis in the The European Magazine, (72) July-December 1817 notes him as a lover of the drama which may help identify him as he is an attendee of Hazlitt's lectures.
According to Biographical Memoirs, he was also considered to have a 'studious disposition', and counted Godwin, Benj. Thompson, Theodore Hook, Martin Smart, Coleridge, Barnes, Hazlitt, Sir L. St George Skeffington, Rev. Rowland Hill, Dr Carr, Sir Richard Phillips, and some men of the medical profession among his acquaintances.
He was the father of Charles James Berridge Aldis (1808-1872), physician and public health reformer who probably also appears in the diary.
All instances of Aldis have been coded as Charles. B and E Aldis (deceased children of Sir Charles to whom the Biographical Memoirs refer?) have been left uncoded while Dr Aldis has been coded as Charles Berridge Aldis. Lady Aldis has been coded since Godwin notes her death.
