Alcock moved to London and studied at Joshua Brookes's school of anatomy and at the Westminster Hospital in 1806 or 1807 after working in Sunderland. He later concentrated on surgery and gave lectures on the subject in 1828.

Godwin mainly knows Alcock as part of John Martin's Marylebone set. Like Martin, Alcock was orginally from Northumberland.
