Sir John Thomas Duckworth (1748–1817) was dispatched with five ships to Constantinople with orders to protect the British ambassador, Charles Arbuthnot (1767-1850), and to secure Ottoman adherence to British demands, including the participation of Constantinople in the Anglo-Russian alliance.
