WG is reading Volume I of this novel in May 1796. WG writes to Hays on 9 March 1796—letter 89 in Volume I of Pamela Clemit's edition of Godwin's letters. Clemit's footnote says this is ‘a further portion of the ms draft of memoirs of Emma Courtney.' The novel was published in November 1796.
