Use of Reason (18 April 1792) Watts, IsaacLogick: or, the right use of reason in the enquiry after
truth. With a variety of rules to guard against error, in the
affairs of religion and human life, as well as in the sciences. By
I. Watts. 1725OR
Collins, AnthonyEssay concerning the use of reason in propositions, the
evidence whereof depends upon human testimony. 1707OR
Priestley, JosephAn appeal to the serious and candid professors of
Christianity: on the following subjects, viz. I,The use of reason
in matters of religion. II, The power of man to do the will of
God. III, Original sin. IV, Election and reprobation. V, The
divinity of Christ, and VI, Atonement for Sin by the death of
Christ. By a lover of the gospel. 1771There are many titles which incorporate the phrase ‘use of
reason.' These three are equally possible titles for WG's reading on
this date. A new, corrected edition of Watts was printed in London
1792, and Peter Marshall's biography of
WG says that this work would have been among those used by his
tutors at Hoxton (34). This work, then, seems quite likely for a
quick reference. However, both Collins and Priestley were authors
much read by WG at this time, and both Collins's work (at 56 pages)
and Priestley's work (at 24 pages) are short enough to be read in a
single day.
